Annie's Ramblings - 13 March 2020

Hi there. What crazy times we live in, when every day we are being bombarded with news stories of the effects of corona virus. It is enough to make you want to ‘go bush’ or lock yourself in your sewing room.

13.03.20 1I think we are in need of some good news stories, or at least a reminder to be thankful for the good things going on in our lives.

Just arrived this week is the new book from Anni Downs (Hatched and Patched) called “The Making of a Peaceful Day” which is chock full of projects large and small. It is also really good value at $38.00 when you compare this to the price of just one pattern.

New magazines have arrived in with the latest issues of Quiltmania, Simply Modern, Quilters Companion, Quilting Arts and American Quilt Sampler available now.

13.03.20 2One of the charity groups that we support at Annie’s is making reusable cloth shopping bags to raise money for Ranui House. The bags are $5.00 each and are available at Annie’s or through the Annie’s website. All the money goes to Ranui house which provides much needed accommodation and support for people from all over the region who are having treatment at Christchurch Hospital. This group has also made hundreds of quilts for Ranui as well as Ronald McDonald House and they are always looking for more helpers.

This week’s recipe is a tasty winter warmer that can be cooked in the pan or the crock pot.

Pork Chops with Sweet and Sour Cabbage

  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 4 pork chops
  • 2 medium apples
  • ½ red cabbage
  • 2 apples
  • 300 ml cider or apple juice
  • 4 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 4 Tbsp cider vinegar
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Trim the excess fat from the chops. Heat the oil in a fry pan and seal the meat on both sides. Set aside, and in the same pan place the finely chopped cabbage and sliced apple and simmer with the cider until the liquid has reduced. Stir in the sugar and cider vinegar. Place the chops on top of the cabbage, cover and simmer until the chops are cooked through and the liquid is almost all gone. Season to taste.
