Annie's Ramblings 13 July 2023 - Stitching time and a new BOM!

Hi there. Another week of great sewing weather...bring on the sunshine please. I am sure it is very beautiful, but there may be a very good reason why I was not born in the Scottish Highlands – living in a castle and being chilled to your bones most of the time does not have a great deal of appeal, but then maybe I have just been reading too many novels!

13.7.23 1My favourite book at the moment is “Embroidering her Truth” by Clare Hunter about Mary Queen of Scots. This is a fascinating insight into the value of cloth and embroidery, it’s symbolism, and the perilous life of a royal in 16th century Europe.

Our new Block of the Month “Sending My Love” by Australian designer Gail Pan is now available with fabrics as pictured ($38.00 per month). This is a 6 month program with the border, sashing and binding fabric being delivered with the last block. You can check out more details on the Annie’s website.

13.7.23 2This wee Scrappy Pencil case is another useful project that would also make a nice gift – ideal for writing or quilting tools! Available as a kit ($38.00 including zip, covered button, and fabrics) or as a pattern ($28.00 including zip and covered button). Additional zips are also available in packs of 2 for $14.50.

Now onto the recipe...try these as an entrée to a delicious curry or snack while you are watching the rugby or perhaps “a take a plate finger food” type dish.

Spiced Onion Fritters

  • 4 large onions
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • ¾ c chickpea flour
  • ½ c plain flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1 ½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp chilli powder (or paprika for a milder taste)
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Peel and slice the onions and garlic very finely. Mix the flours and the egg, soda and spice. Add enough water to make a smooth batter and then add in the onion and garlic.

Heat 2 cm of oil in a shallow pan and fry the fritters until golden. Drain on a paper towel and serve hot with sweet chilli sauce and mango chutney.

Have a great holiday weekend. Please note that we will be open Saturday only. See you then!

Best wishes and happy stitching from the team at Annie’s CQS.
