Annie's Ramblings 10 February 2023 - Classes, Retreats, Books and Quilts!

Hi there.

Well....blow me down we are at the end of the week again! Actually I probably shouldn’t even say that out loud with Cyclone Gabrielle threatening to make her presence felt!

There is lots to talk about this week as we plans in place for our annual retreat in Akaroa which is planned for 7-9 July. Staying at the Akaroa Village Inn and stitching in The Boat Shed looking out over the harbour this is a great weekend sewing, shopping, eating great food and hanging out with a whole bunch of crazy quilters and embroiderers just like you! Let us know if you are keen to join us as places are limited.

10.02.23 1Just arrived in this week is this very beautiful book “Flowers for Elizabeth” from Inspirations. Written by Susan O’Connor this book features a collection of exquisitely embroidered botanical motifs and stitching projects celebrating the opulence and beauty of the Elizabethan era and showcasing some of Queen Elizabeth’s favourite fruits and flowers. This truly is a stunning book with amazing photography and a must have for your stitching library. ($65.00)

10.02.23 2The other thing I would like to show you is this quilt I have just finished. This is my version of the School Girl Sampler from the book of the same name by Kathleen Tracy ($59.00). This is a treasury of blocks reminiscent of those sewn by schoolgirls during the 19th century. Packed full of patterns and ideas for small quilts and small projects as well this one using all 72 blocks. We have this as a kit ($165.00 plus the book) which includes the fabric for borders, sashings, and applique as well as a collection of 100 x 5” charm squares which you can mix and match for your blocks. You may also like to add in some additional fabric from your stash.

We had our first dress making class this week with local tailoress Paula Preece helping us to measure and draft patterns for our made to measure skirts. These classes are being held at Annie’s in blocks of 3 weeks ($54.00). Our next block of classes will cover tops and tunics, let us know if you are keen to join us or if you would like to be put on a wait list for the next skirt class.

Now on to the recipe...breakfast, lunch or dessert these pancakes are always a winner teamed up with honey, fruit, cream, icecream or maple syrup.

Coconut and Honey Pancakes

  • 250 g plain flour
  • 1 tbsp ground flax seeds
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 ¼ cup coconut milk
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil

Mix the flour, ground flax seeds and baking powder in a bowl and make a well in the centre. Add in the eggs and coconut milk and whisk to mix. Melt the coconut oil in the pan and then add to the mixture.

Cook spoonfuls of the batter in the oiled pan until bubbles form and then flip over. Stack the cooked pancakes on warm plates and smother with your favourite toppings.
